Project Title:
Raptor Education Program

Description:
The Raptor Education Program (Birds of Prey Presentations) was initiated at the beginning of the 1998/1999 ski season. Twice-weekly raptor presentations include a slide show and appearance of live birds that provide hundreds of visitors the opportunity to learn about raptors. They are given by Rebecca Lessard, a licensed raptor rehabilitator. Presentations include an explanation about the declining raptor populations in Michigan and nationwide, education about the impact that humans have on these birds, proactive strategies for helping that include decreasing or eliminating the use of pesticides, providing nest boxes, leaving mature trees standing for cavity nesters, and protecting large contiguous tracts of property. The presentations also provide tips to remember if an injured or sick bird is found. Five hundred employees attended the presentation in the 1998/99 ski season, and 500 more attended in the 1999/2000 ski season. Many guests participated as well.
