Water Use For Snowmaking Wachusett Mountain Ski Area, MA | Project Title: Wachusett-Lake Water-SnowmakingDescription: In 1999, after WMA had planned to install a one-mile, twelve-inch pipeline to provide supplemental water to the snowmaking pond, they commissioned a study to determine if any energy saving alternatives could be used. The study showed a twenty-inch pipe would reduce friction losses in the pipe, allowing the use of smaller pump motors, and thereby reducing excess energy usage. The more efficient system can deliver over 5,000 gallons per minute to the main snowmaking pond. Another study showed WMA could also improve its snowmaking system if a new pump were installed on a variable speed drive which would eliminate the need for control valves and allow the speed of the pump motor to more closely match the needs of the system instead of having the pump run at full output when it was not needed. Lastly, aging pipes were replaced with larger piping to once again, reduce friction losses, which in turn reduce energy demand for the system, improving overall system performance.
