Crested Butte Mountain Resort, CO
Project Title:
Conservation Easements and Land Agreements

Description:
Crested Butte Mountain Resort (CBMR) President Edward Callaway was pivotal in the organizational establishment and development of the Gunnison Ranchland Conservation Legacy. The Legacy purchases convservation easements on ranchland, protecting the land from development. Legacy averages $3 million dollars of funding annually from federal, state and local sources, including $125,000 from CBMR. CBMR also provides Legacy with ongoing media and public exposure. Through 2000, over 7,000 acres have been protected with an additional 40,000 acres committed for purchase as funds become available. CBMR also supports the Crested Butte Land Trust with annual pledges of $120,000 as well as 4% of the development profits from land acquired in a three-way swap between CBMR, USFS and the State Land Board. Additionally, CBMR also supports both Legacy and the Land Trust through a pledge of 1% of food, beverage, rental and retail revenues split evenly between the two organizations.
