Education and Outreach
Blue Mountain, ON
Project Title:
Audubon Outreach/Education Program

Description:
Our golf course (Monterra) is a certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary. Three to four times during the golf season, a school class (grade 5 or high school) comes to the resort to tour the golf course and to see how the golf course implements the 5 principles set out by the Audubon program. 1) wildlife and habitat management; 2) outreach and education; 3) water conservation; 4) water quality management; and 5) integrated pest management. Additionally, BMR participates in an adopt a highway program. We adopted 2.8 km of county highway along the base of the resort. We are responsible for cleaning up the ditches along the side of the road twice a year. Our most recent clean up was on May 9, 2002. Staff members (including the president of the resort) come out and clean up the side of the highway for a couple of hours. This year we collected 25 bags of garbage in 2 hours.
