Water Use For Snowmaking
Smugglers' Notch Resort, VT
Project Title:
Snowmaking Reservoir

Description:
In Snowmaking operations, Smugglers' employs the latest technology and planning practices in order to minimize impacts to the regional watershed. the need for large volumes of water at times of low stream flow has the potential to impact aquatic species sensitive to change. One way Smugglers' has minimized potential impact is by establishing conservation flows in the streams that provide water to our snowmaking infrastructure. The conservation flows are the average water flows needed to support aquatic life. In 2001, Smugglers' constructed a 20-million gallon reservoir which allows us to store water during periods of high stream flow. This water can then be used when stream flows are low, thus maintaining the conservation flows. The use of newer, more efficient snow-guns increases the volume of snow produced from a given amount of water.
