- Free Park and Pipe Clinic-
12:30 pm and 1:30 pm
A free Park and Pipe Clinic will be offered to guests and employees focusing on Smart Style safety techniques and Terrain Park and Pipe instruction. The clinic, delivered by ski and snowboard instructors will be preceded by a Smart Style video encouraging the themes of ‘Respect gets Respect’, ‘Easy Style It’, and ‘Look Before You Leap’. The clinics are open to guests and employees interested in improving their park and pipe skills.
The meeting times for the clinics are 12:30 pm and 1:30 pm at the ski school bell.
Peanut Butter and Rail Jam Contest 3 pm
- Children’s Poster Contest Booth
10am to 1 pm All children are invited to take part in Responsibility Code Activities for Children. Sierra at Tahoe will provide supplies to color/draw representations of the various responsibility codes to submit into for fabulous prizes. NSAA sponsors their annual National Poster Contest as well as Sierra-at-Tahoe’s very own local contest. A variety of games and activities will be provided for children to participate.
The booth will be set-up in the Aspen café for the specifically designated time periods.
Outdoor Magazine Product Expo-
Outdoor magazine representatives have been invited to display selected “winter gear” to prepare yourself for the environments. Outdoor magazine will give away their products as well as magazine subscriptions to several lucky winners.
Tuesday Jan 18
- Wellness day HR representatives will distribute oranges, Emergen-C packets, Balance Bars and water to employees around the hill. Efforts will be made to provide suggestions to stay healthy and positive during winter months. Ongoing events throughout the day.
- Ergonomics/Physio Day- A collection of ergonomics tips will be distributes to all departments offering advice on avoiding injury and pain. Captain Safety and HR representatives will present stretching sessions to employees among the various departments.
A physical therapist is invited to the hill to deliver a brief clinic on proper stretching techniques and treatment suggestions specific to snow-sport. Time-TBA and location likely the Aspen Café

Thursday Jan 20
- Equipment Repair for Safety – Repair shop employees will deliver a brief clinic on equipment safety and upkeep of skis, boots, boards, and bindings to insure prolonged and safe usage. Offer sunscreen in a pump bulk size bottle (to reduce waste). (Repair and Rentals)
- Dual Slalom Course Benefit for Sierra Education Foundation- A Dual Slalom Course will be set-up on Lower Main from 10am-2pm welcoming all paid guest to ride the course for a small fee 1$ per ride and 5$ for all day (further questions contact Jenn Kotter in Marketing)
Friday January 21
- Backcountry Awareness Day
11am & 2 pm
A simulated avalanche dog rescue will take place at 11 am and 2 p.m. facilitated by our ski patrol staff. Guests are invited to a free informative clinic including information about backcountry awareness, “beacon basin”, and avalanche procedures. Individuals present for the presentation and information session on backcountry awareness will be invited to a discounted backcountry tour.
To attend the mock rescue session meet at the trail map just below easy rider chair at 10:45 and 1:45. Just look for our rescue dogs and ski patrol staff.
Children’s Poster Contest Booth

Arapahoe Basin

- February 5-10 Arapahoe Basin will be focusing on increasing Avalanche Awareness with programs like the 3rd Annual Beacon Bowl, Avalanche Awareness Day and an avalanche school.

Aspen/Snowmass

- Helmets are required for children 12 and under participating in Aspen’s Ski & Snowboard Schools.
- “Safety Tip of the Day” program: Each day’s tip is posted at all four mountains and is announced on the local RSN television station, Channel 16.
- Aspen/Snowmass will have Radar Speed traps on the hill so skiers and riders can realize exactly how fast they are traveling in Slow Skiing Zones. They will be issued “fun citations” as an educational tool.
- Daily Patrol tips will be published in the local papers and broadcast on local radio stations during Safety Awareness Week.
- Area students are competing in a school video contest by producing safety oriented videos that will be shown at next year’s school safety presentations.
Beaver Creek

- Nearly 4,000 guests will be deputized as members of the Beaver Creek Safety Posse with custom-designed hats, badges and buttons as the resort celebrates National Safety Awareness Week, Jan. 15-21, 2005.
- Resort-wide events planned throughout Safety Awareness Week include a mountain rescue helicopter landing, new canine rescue demonstrations and photo opportunities, avalanche workshops, a beacon contest, new trail checks with ski patrol, and new Speeder runs with the resort's on-mountain safety patrol.
- Yellow Jackets patrol the mountain, helping to educate guests and enforce Your Responsibility Code, monitor speed in high-traffic areas, and assist guests with questions or needs. Beaver Creek’s Yellow Jacket team is proactive in rewarding positive displays of points outlined in Your Responsibility Code.
- Space Not Speed: Vail Resorts introduced this new slogan during the past winter season, sparking renewed awareness of on-mountain safety among skiers and riders. Space Not Speed means give other skiers, riders and objects space on the mountain and maintain a controlled speed at all times.
- Beaver Creek advocates continued teaching of responsibility on the mountain in all ski and snowboard group and private lessons through the Beaver Creek Ski and Snowboard School. Children get help with learning about safety and responsibility from Dusty the Safety Eagle, who visits the Children’s Ski and Snowboard School Center.
- In its third year, the Eagle County Safety Alliance represents a partnership between several local law enforcement and medical entities, including Avon Police, Vail Police, Eagle River Fire Protection District and Vail Valley Medical Center. The alliance works in conjunction with Beaver Creek's Yellow Jacket on-mountain safety patrol to educate mountain users on "Your Responsibility Code" and skiing and riding etiquette.
Breckenridge

- Breckenridge Safety Challenge is a program directed toward individual departments or teams, encouraging them to create a program for safety week, including decorations, contests, games, activities, and messages.
- Breckenridge Ski Resort has created the Mountain Safety Department. This department is responsible for the education and enforcement of the Skier and Rider Responsibility Code.
Copper Mountain

- The Extensive Slope Watch Program is designed and implemented to promote and educate visitors about safety on the slopes.
- Copper Mountain brings in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students from Summit Middle School to spend an entire day with the Copper Mtn. Ski Patrol. Each class gets an opportunity to feel what it is like to take a toboggan rides down the hill, be evacuated from a chair lift, get a seminar on avalanche control and occurrence and understand on a more complete level what programs are in place toward creating a reasonably safe winter snow sport environment for our guests.
- Extensive Slope Watch Program designed to promote and educate visitors about safety on the slopes. Ski Patrol visits classrooms at Summit County Elementary with Avalanche search and rescue Dogs to educate kids on the Skier Responsibility Code.
Durango (Purgatory)

Eldora

- Eldora Mountain Resort and Marker USA have teamed together to encourage helmet use and to promote skier safety. On Saturday and Sunday, January 15th and 16th, in conjunction with the National Ski Areas Association’s (NSAA) National Safety Awareness Week, Eldora will offer its guests a free “test drive” of an 04/05 Marker M-2 or Kid’s Tracer Plus helmet. After trying the helmet, guests may purchase the Marker helmets at up to 65% below retail price.
- Eldora’s safety commitment to its on-snow staff includes purchasing Marker helmets for the Ski Patrol and the SnowSports School.
Keystone

- Keystone Resort is unveiling a new safety bus painted bright yellow with safety messages/theme. It’s a moving billboard and a unique way to increase awareness about safety on the slopes throughout the resort.
- In order to help first-time skiers or snowboarders to learn new techniques and the rules of the slopes, Keystone’s offering a special Learn-to-ski/ride safely program during January. The package is just $64 for beginner full-day ski/ride lessons and includes rentals, lesson and lift ticket. Offered for kids or adults starting Jan. 15, ending Jan. 31.
- The resort also is providing education to local kids and the local Summit County community through safety presentations at local schools and opportunities to interact with members of Keystone ski patrol and Mountain Watch on and off the mountain.
- This year, resort employees will sport the Space Not Speed (as well as Smart Style and Know the Code) stickers and educate skiers and snowboarders to maintain space between themselves and other objects and to also maintain a safe speed at all times.
- The Keystone A51 terrain park crew is smart stylin’ a rail with signage and using it as a way to spark dialogue with the jibbers and riders.
- Kids who can recite one principle of Your Responsibility Code receive a coupon for a free hot chocolate. Look for members of Keystone’s Mountain Watch (in yellow jackets) or Ski Patrol (red jackets).
- Safety checks: Stop by Keystone Sports in the Mountain house or River Run base areas for free checks of your binding settings and gear throughout the week.
- Safety photos: Head to the top of Dercum Mountain for your safety photo with Samson, a St. Bernard and Ski patrol’s mascot, and Keystone’s fuzzy, lovable mascot Dercum Dog
- Keystone kicks off its safety poster contest with safety presentations to kids ski/ride school. Pick up safety poster entry forms at Guest Services or Kids ski/ride school. Posters are due Feb. 1.
Loveland

Steamboat

- Steamboat Ski Patrol visits Routt County schools and encourages elementary students to participate in the NSAA Safety Poster contest. Last season, Devin Wilkinson, age 12 of Steamboat Springs, took top honors in the NSAA poster contest. The 331 posters entered all related to one of the seven points in “Your Responsibility Code.”
- Steamboat participates in the National Ski Areas Association’s (NSAA) National Safety Awareness Week, Lids On Kids Program and Head’s Up Safety Initiative. To promote this industry-wide safety initiative, Steamboat has developed creative safety programs unique to its operations that will be implemented during Safety Week. These include safety demonstrations, on-mountain contests, Boeri helmet promotions, redeemable coupons for guests who can recite parts of Your Responsibility Code, ski school safety demonstrations, employee competitions, and participation in the Kids’ Safety Poster Contest, a local contest that invites elementary-aged children in resort communities to design safety-related posters.
- A Skier Safety Tent at the base area is available during high traffic periods. The tent provides information regarding ski patrol and the Responsibility Code.
- Steamboat has several designated slow skier zones associated with high traffic areas throughout the mountain.
- All Steamboat rental shops – Steamboat Ski Rentals, Ridesports, Steamboat Ski & Sport, and Steamboat Grand Rentals – have helmets available to rent.
- Steamboat has eight courtesy patrollers who focus on skier education and enforcement of the Skier Safety Code.
Vail

- Vail Mountain is unveiling a new safety mascot, Pork Chop the Safety Pig, who will be on hand throughout the winter promoting Vail's safety messages on and off the slopes. Pork Chop will visit with and quiz children's ski school classes about safe skiing and riding, assist and offer tips to guests and perfect his tricks safely in the terrain parks, where he is affectionately known as "P. Choppy".
- Also new this season, the Vail Ski Patrol and Yellow Jackets have a safety display at Mid Vail which emphasizes the role of Vail employees, our guests and the community in creating a safe and fun environment on the mountain for all. The NSAA has recognized Vail for having the Best Overall Safety Program in the industry for the past five seasons and the awards are a part of the display.
- Vail Ski Patrol will be handing out Vail Junior Ski Patrol zipper pulls to kids, who must first answer a safety-related question.
- The Safety Posse Kids Corral at the Session Snowboarding event in Vail on Saturday is a place where kids can learn about Smart Style Awareness, the freestyle terrain safety initiative developed by NSAA and Burton and a place for local kids to drop off their Safety Week Coloring Contest Posters.
- Vail is home to the Yellow Jackets, an arm of the Vail Ski Patrol that is purposely visible on the mountain to provide daily monitored slow runs and increases guest awareness of mountain safety.
- In addition to events and activities for skiers and riders during Safety Week, Vail Mountain employees participate in snow sculpture and department contests that highlight the seven points of Your Responsibility Code as well as department best practices that are implemented on a year-round basis.
Winter Park

- Helmets are free for kids who participate in the Adventure Junction Children’s Center and are available for rent at the rental shop.
- The Skier Education and Assistance Team (SEAT): Organized and administered by the Ski Patrol, team participants come from a variety of operational departments and are trained to monitor traffic, give directions and assistance, and slow down fast skiers/riders in slow zones. The can give warnings or pull passes as necessary. They are concentrated in high traffic areas and have a higher presence during busy times. They also do school education in local and Front Range schools and provide “lodge talks” on safety to large groups visiting the resort upon request.
IDAHO
Pebble Creek Ski Area

Pebble Creek Ski Area is hosting Max Safety Day on Saturday, January 15th in conjunction with the National Safety Initiative. Activities throughout the day will focus on safety awareness.
- "Heads Up, Know the Code" is the theme of a Kid's Poster Contest. Children are invited to draw a poster of one of the seven safety codes. The poster drawing station will be set up all day in the lodge with crayons and paper available. Patrollers will meet with kids during lunch with fun information and "Know the Code" coloring contest assistance. Local prizes will be awarded with winning posters being entered in the National Contest.
- Winter storms are among nature's most impressive weather spectacles. Learning about winter weather safety can save your life! The Pocatello National Weather Service (NWS) will be in the lodge to share information on how to avoid winter weather mishaps or deal with them until help arrives. Adults and children will have the opportunity to learn about winter weather safety, where to find winter weather forecasts and avalanche information.
- Children of all ages will be able to make their own anemometer, a tool for measuring wind speed. They may also gather instructions to build a complete, simple weather station for their own home and possibly become an official Weather Spotter for the National Weather Service.
- A display on Avalanche Safety will be set up in the lodge.
- Scott's Ski and Sports, Barrie's Sports and Ride On Bikes & Snow are bringing their full helmet lines to allow for guests to try on helmets. Helmets will be displayed from 11:30am to 1:30pm in the lodge. Helmets can be purchased at that time.
- Pebble Creek has teamed up with the American Red Cross to promote safety awareness and encourage skiers and boarders to help others by donating blood. Representatives from the Red Cross will set up in the lodge from 11:30 to 1:30 for skiers and boarders to sign up for a time to donate blood. Those signing up will be entered in a drawing for day tickets.
- Events will culminate with a Sweet Turns for Safety Race. Sweet Turns help you control speed and avoid obstacles. The racecourse on the Aspen will have all kinds of fun kinks and turns. The Sweet Prize of a candy bar for all entrants is sponsored by Gem State Distributing. Race time is 2:00pm.
- A backcountry Avalanche Awareness Workshop is scheduled at 10:00am on Friday, January 14. Topics will include an introduction to stability evaluation, route finding and avalanche rescue. The workshop will take place both indoors and outdoors in the base area. The workshop is for persons age 13 and up, with parental permission required for those under 18 and is presented as a community service and there is no fee.
NEW HAMPSHIRE
Pats Peak Ski Area

NEW YORK
Holiday Valley Resort & Conference Center

- On our website & in our local paper we wrote an article that describes National Safety Awareness Week and its purpose. We also broke down the seven points of the Responsibility Code as well as the safety points in Smart Style. We gave tips on personal safety i.e. sun safety and being prepared to hit the slopes.
- We place bright colored attention flags at merge or slow skiing areas to remind customers to slow down and be aware. The flags stay up all season.
- 1 point of Your Responsibility Code will be featured on our slope report nightly through the week.
- Kids in the Day Care center are participating in the National Kids Poster Contest.
- We are distributing orange "Be Safe" stickers to all the kids in our night school programs (approx. 7500 kids) Safety Patrol will step on the bus to talk about safety and hand out the stickers. If a student is seen on mountain by Safety Patrol wearing the "Be Safe" sticker and doing something positive the Patroller will enter the student in a contest for a great prize. Safety will also hand out pizza coupons to random kids seen wearing the sticker.
- At 6:25 (right before the 6:30 group lesson time) every night of National Safety Awareness Week, we will be launching a roman candle fireworks show off a sign constructed from christmas lights that says "Be Safe"!!
- We sent an e-flyer to all school advisors describing National Safety Awareness Week and our focus. We are encouraging them to talk to the kids about the Your Responsibility Code and Slope Style safety on the mountain.
- Safety messages will be displayed on the lift towers on two high traffic lifts.
Holiday Valley employees will compete in a Safety Slogan contest. The winner will receive a prize and their slogan will be displayed during National Safety Awareness Week
OHIO
Mad River Mountain

Next Snow Search is organized by Snow Monsters and sponsored by Sports Illustrated for kids. Mad River is one of several resorts hosting a qualifying competition for the finals held in Keystone Colorado. Mad River's Next Snow Search will be taking place the same time as the NSAA Safety Week.
- Snow Pro's will also be hosting several safety Demo's throughout the week. These Demo's will be following the same basic instructions.

- Lead by Mountain Safety Patrol (MSP), all departments will participate in the Ski Awareness program and increase interaction with guests on the mountain to promote skier safety.
- Mountain Safety Patrol will promote safety message with increased guest interaction, games, contests, giveaways, and prizes.
- MSP and Ambassadors will arrange a scavenger hunt for guests with many prizes including daily ski passes and one 3-day ski ticket. Guests will be given safety clues at the Main Base Lodge and items spread out all over the mountain.
