Storm Exchange
Weather Risk Management Best Practices – Everything from Protecting Seasonal Income to Accelerating Customer Demand
David Riker, CEO, Storm Exchange

Though weather risk management is not a new practice, few businesses have fully quantified the impacts of the weather on their sales, expenses, and, ultimately, profits. Moreover, there are many stories about companies that have attempted to mitigate weather risk in the past, but have not structured the right kind of program.

Fortunately, new tools and techniques to better manage weather risk have come of age. If you haven’t taken a hard look at the weather derivatives market, please be sure you attend this session. We will explore how today’s weather indices can accurately capture the risks presented by the weather to a particular resort, and how they can be used to structure an over-the-counter derivative contract to provide the precise level of risk protection a buyer might want – everything from contracts that protect seasonal revenues to customer rebate programs that can accelerate customer demand for season tickets. We’ll include a number of illustrative examples, and we’ll take pains to stress that accurately and appropriately hedging weather risk begins with accurately correlating weather events to a resort’s business results, operating history, traffic patterns, etc.
