From the Desk of Michael Berry
We hope that you will join us in San Francisco as we proudly present NSAA’s 45th National Convention and Tradeshow. This year’s show comes at the close of yet another extraordinary season, one that produced favorable snow conditions from coast-to-coast. This season was also marked by unique visibility on the environmental front with the construction of the first wind turbine at a U.S. ski area – a notable milestone that not only garnered widespread media coverage, but also fortified our industry’s reputation as a recognized leader in environmental stewardship. Clearly the 2007/08 season is one that will be spoken of for years to come.
Yet despite our successes, this season, arguably unlike any that has proceeded it, served to remind us that now is no time to lose sight of our focus on the formidable challenges that lie ahead. We’ve identified the current demographic opportunity we have to convert more of our younger guests into lifelong participants, but that window is closing fast. The actions we take today will help shape the long-term future of our sport, and in the end, our growth will only be realized through keen attention to the fundamentals of our business.
To help underscore the importance of keeping our eye on the proverbial ball, this year major league baseball executive Paul DePodesta is slated as our featured keynote speaker. One of the youngest Major League GM’s in history, Paul has made a career of evaluating, measuring and assigning value to talent and revolutionized the way baseball teams are built. Attendees will find the lessons Paul shares on building success while spending less, can be directly applied to ski area operations.
Also, award-winning journalist Guy Garcia will outline ways in which the multi-cultural consumer is transforming American business, and adventurer Jamie Clark will share his triumphs, and lessons learned while surmounting one of the World’s most arduous obstacles, Mt. Everest.
In addition, we are honored to have U.S. Forest Service Chief Gail Kimbell at our convention. Chief Kimbell will address the Forest Service’s three major challenges for the future: climate change, water and getting more kids in the woods.
As always, RRC Associates will present season-ending visitation data, and provide a detailed look at the hard work that lies ahead on our Model for Growth initiative. This, along with a wide array of innovate ski industry products and services, is just a small sampling of what we have in store for show attendees this year. We look forward to seeing you in San Francisco, May 28-31.
Sincerely,
Michael Berry
