FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
National Kid’s Safety Poster Contest Winners Announced
LAKEWOOD, Colo. – May 8, 2007 – Today the National Ski Areas
Association (NSAA) announced the winners of the eighth annual National Kid’s Safety
Poster Contest. The 2006/07 winners were Emma Maxwell, 10, representing Holiday
Valley Resort, N.Y., and Alice Holmquist, also 10, representing Steamboat, Colo. For
their efforts, Emma and Alice each received a Pro-Tec helmet.
The annual contest is part of NSAA’s HEADS UP safety initiative. The contest targets
fourth, fifth and sixth graders, but any elementary age child can participate. This
year thousands of children created posters at ski areas in 17 states across the country.
The students are asked to create a poster related to any one of the seven points of
the Your Responsibility Code, or one of the three points of the Smart Style safety
initiative.
Emma’s poster was recognized as the “Best Overall Safety Message.” Her poster emphasized
the importance of making sure landing areas were clear before using terrain features.
Emma, who’s who first started skiing when she was five, skis nearly every weekend from
December to April. According to her mom, she likes the social aspect of skiing and can
often times be found singing and clapping as she skis. Meanwhile Alice, who received
the award for “Most Creative Safety Message” for her poster featuring the message
“Always Stay In Control” has been skiing since she was three and is a member of the
Trailblazers Ski Club. This season Alice worked on perfecting a 180 in the terrain park.
Both winning posters were on display at the NSAA National Convention and Tradeshow
held at the La Quinta Resort & Club in Palm Springs, Calif., and will be published in the
August issue of the NSAA Journal. For more information on the Kids’ Safety Poster Contest
or other NSAA safety initiatives and resources, visit the Safety & Education
