Events for National Safety Awareness Week 2008  

CALIFORNIA

Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort

  • Northstar Resort will host a “safety information tent” at mid-mountain (top of the gondola), where guests will see large banners with the skier and rider responsibility codes, smart style codes, and information about the “Lids on Kids” program. The tent will be manned with members of the resort’s mountain safety team, who will invite guests over to the tent for an opportunity to win resort schwag if they are able to recite one of the responsibility or smart style codes. Collateral focused on the “get smart” initiative will also be provided to guests.
  • In addition to Northstar Resort’s own information tent, the resort has partnered with Giro and will host an additional tent at mid-mountain (top of the gondola) that will feature a selection of helmets and information about the benefits of helmet usage and the “Lids on Kids” program.
  • Captain Safety will continue to make appearances on the mountain during Safety Week, and in the information tent, helping to direct skier traffic and remind guests to ski and ride with care.
  • The resort’s mountain safety team will be posted on various ski trails around the mountain with radar guns to monitor the speed of skiers and riders to remind and educate them on the importance of safety on the mountain and skiing or riding in control.
  • The resort’s terrain park staff will continue to educate guests visiting the terrain parks during Safety Week. This season, they have developed two-sided “business cards” featuring tips for skiing/riding terrain park features, as well as one of the smart style codes. These cards are used by terrain park staff as a way to start a conversation with guests skiing/riding the parks.
  • Terrain park staff will also be handing out smart style buttons and other schwag to guests as they make an effort to educate them about smart style codes. Collateral focused on the new “make a plan” initiative is also a focus of the resort’s and the terrain park staff.
  • Occasional sightings of the Burton Stash Yeti will occur in the terrain parks during Safety Week, with the Yeti also working to educate guests about the skier/rider responsibility code.
  • The resort’s terrain park staff filmed team rider, Jussi Oksanen breaking down the tips of the smart style code. These tips will be aired on the Northstar Resort Network, a closed circuit TV channel that is broadcast in the on-site lodging units around the resort.
  • Poster contests for kids ages 5-12 will be held. Each poster entry will receive a complimentary child lift ticket (one entry per child).
  • Discounts on helmets and other select safety equipment will also be offered.

  • Kids Poster Contest – Kids ages 4-11 are invited to participate to create a poster for National Safety Week. Prizes are awarded to the top four. Posters are sent to the NSAA for participation in national contest.
  • Terrain Park Clinic – Open to all ages and abilities. Lift ticket or season pass required. The Park Crew gives a clinic on Smart Style. Clinics last between 15 and 30 minutes.

  • Responsibility Code & Smart Style Trivia with Captain Safety – Captain Safety will quiz guests on the Skier Responsibility Code and Smart Style. Prizes include oranges, granola and stickers.
  • Safety Week Retail Discounts -Wax and Edge (Mini Tune) in the Repair Shop for only $7.50 (50% off) Plus, 15% off all Helmets, Locks and Leashes in Sierra Mountain Sports.
  • Pre-Safety Week Employee Healthy Treat – Yoga classes will take place every 15 minutes from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m.
  • Smart Style & Responsibility Code Trivia to enter Snowboard Raffle (Employee’s only!) – Employees that come to HR and recite the full Skier Responsibility Code and Smart Style Code will be entered into a raffle to win a prize.

  • New this year, there will be a Q&A at the top of the parks at Snowmass and Buttermilk on terrain park safety. Kids will come up and answer the questions. If they get them correct, they get a cool Aspen/Snowmass bandana.
  • Snowmass will host a Safety Carnival with demonstrations and games for kids
  • Aspen Mountain will do their “Beacon Basin” demos. This is beacon training for avalanches.
  • Aspen Highlands will have their “Avi Dog Demos” – guests love this one!
  • Buttermilk will host a Kids Safety Day – This includes a safety poster contest for local kids.

  • Avalanche and Backcountry Awareness Classroom Session: Patrol Headquarters at top of Cinch Express Lift, sign ups required by calling 970-845-6610. Includes beacon and route finding work for beginners and experienced backcountry enthusiasts in the new Beacon Bowl training park from.
  • Beacon Search Contest, Red Tail Camp. Must have participated in morning backcountry session to participate. The winner of the contest will receive a free beacon.
  • Avalanche and Backcountry Awareness Workshop, Avon Public Library, 6 p.m.-8 p.m. Ski enthusiasts looking for assistance in backcountry safety prior to their trips can attend a complimentary Avalanche and Backcountry Awareness workshop. The workshop will focus on snow physics, route selection, evaluating snow stability, beacons, and avalanche phenomenon and rescue techniques. The classes are led by members of Beaver Creek’s Ski Patrol team who volunteer their time to help prepare backcountry skiers, snowboarders and explorers for the winter wilderness experience.   • Our Mountain Safety team will man a Safety Week tent at the Silver Queen lift all week. They have free hot chocolate to give away, and draw guests in to hear about safety. During the week, we expect to give out 30 gallons of hot chocolate, several bags of candy, 1,000 stickers and well over 1,000 Responsibility Code cards!
  • The tent was so successful, last year, with our guests that the Patrol Director decided to extend Ski Safety Week by two days and we keep the tent up through the next weekend.
  • Ski Patrol goes to the local schools and ski clubs to talk to the kids about Safety and the Responsibility Code. The stars of the show were always the Avalanche dogs that came along to say hi to the kids.
  • The Avalanche dogs also do daily demonstrations at Tony’s – an intersection of two beginner/intermediate lifts, just above our progression terrain park. The dog owners were there with them, doing avalanche awareness and general safety talks for guests while they enjoyed coffee from Camp 4 Coffee.
  • Ski School instructors have Responsibility Code cards to give out to guests in their lessons.
  • The Terrain Park Attendants hand out more than 500 Slope Style stickers and will talk to park users about Smart Style and park etiquette.
  • We’ve made fliers with the Code of the day and posted them at the base of each lift. At the base of Paradise lift, the lift operators always have a trivia question. So, for the week, the question was “What is the Code of the day?” Anyone who knew got candy!
Employee Specific:
  • Departments will have a daily meeting on the Code of the day.
  • Code of the day fliers will be posted in all locker rooms each day throughout the week.
  • The HR department will be on Prize Patrol all week. They will walk and ski all over the resort, any employees who know the Code of the day, or all the elements of the Code get a prize – candy, movie tickets, or stickers.

  • On Saturday and Sunday, January 19th and 20th, in conjunction with the National Ski Areas Association's (NSAA) National Safety Awareness Week, Eldora will offer its guests a free "test drive" of a Marker helmet. Eldora Mountain Resort and Marker USA have teamed together to encourage helmet use and to promote skier safety. The Eldora / Marker Helmet Test Drive Center will be set up at the base of Cannonball and Challenge lift for the weekend. Guests may ski or snowboard up to the Test Center and try a helmet. After using the helmet, they may purchase it directly at that time (while supplies last). With discounts of up to 50 percent below retail, being subsidized by Eldora and Marker, savings will be significant to the guest.

  • To help promote Safety Week, Keystone launched the new “Play it Safe” Program. The Play it Safe Program is a season-long safety education effort that helps skiers and riders learn how they can be safer on the slopes.
  • Expert ski patrollers and Keystone Mountain Watch staff the Play it Safe tent at the top of the River Run Gondola. The Play it Safe staff can answer mountain safety questions from Resort guests and will be handing out a variety of goodies including sunscreen, lip balm, granola bars, lozenges, coloring books, and stickers to promote safety awareness and wellness in the high-altitude environment of Keystone.   
  • Keystone has also implemented marked “School Zones” on beginner terrain to remind intermediate and advanced skiers to slow down and respect beginner skiers.
  • Mountain Watch patrol members will educate and enforce “Your Responsibility Code” and Colorado Skier Safety Act and also provide guest service.   
  • Safety classes for skiers and riders are available for those who violate mountain rules and/or would like to learn more about mountain safety. The classes educate guests and help them understand the Your Responsibility Code and Colorado Skier Safety Act. Since the inception of the safety classes last year, more than 600 people have participated in the class with minimal recidivism.
  • Signage under chairlifts throughout Keystone Resort features safety messages and educational tips.
  • Personal responsibility, education and awareness are critical for skier safety. However, enforcement is sometimes necessary. The safety of skiers and riders is a top priority at Keystone. Keystone ski patrol avidly enforces the “Your Responsibility Code” and Colorado Skier Safety Act and has revoked the privileges of 180 reckless guests in the 2007-2008 season.

  • Schweitzer has developed a set of trading cards with photos of key safety personnel on the mountain (park rangers, ski patrol, etc) and personal safety messages from those individuals. Youth are encouraged to collect all 12 cards and those who do so qualify to win a 2008/09 season pass.

  • Crystal Mountain is encouraging skiers and snowboarders to know and practice the Responsibility Code through a number of activities and giveaways during Safety Week.

Skiers and Rides can learn about the use of helmets to reduce the risk of brain injury in the event of a fall or crash.   • Whiteface Willy, the wily Whitetail, is visiting the mountain to remind everyone to be safe and have fun while skiing, riding and working at Whiteface. Whiteface Willy is combining old and new efforts to help raise awareness about safe skiing and riding on the mountain.
  • New this year are the Family Ski Zones and “Heads Up…You Set the Example.” The Family Ski Zones are areas which are geared towards families skiing together and monitored closely by Whiteface’s Safety Team. The “Heads Up…You Set the Example” campaign has been implemented at the Whiteface Snow Sports School and the NYSEF Race and Freestyle programs and stresses proper safety etiquette for the adults so kids follow their lead.
  • The Snow Sports School is launching the “Energizer” program. This initiative allows youths to receive a voucher for a cup of hot chocolate after correctly telling a Safety Team member one of the seven rules of skiing and riding’s “Know the Code” policy.
  • Join Whiteface Willy on the slopes on January 21 for a mountain-wide scavenger hunt. Scattered around the mountain, skiers and riders will find safety reminders from Willy, including Whiteface Willy Sez signs. Whiteface Willy will also be out on the slopes trying to catch skiers and riders in the act of doing "good things".
  • Returning this year is the popular Poster Contest for local fourth and fifth graders to promote Willy’s message of safety. The posters will be on display in the base lodge and Kids Kampus Family Center with prizes awarded for the Best Safety Message and Best Art Work.
  • Whiteface Willy works with the Whiteface Ski Patrol, Mountain Hosts, Snow Sports Instructors and Safety Enforcement Team to help ensure everyone has a safe and fun time on the mountain.
  • To learn more about the Whiteface Willy and the Skiers Responsibility Code, stop in the safety tent at the base of the Cloudsplitter Gondola where refreshments and chocolate mints will be handed out.,/li>

 

VERMONT

  • Skiers and riders will notice safety awareness messages throughout Killington Resort and Pico Mountain, including Heads Up - Know the Code signage on lift towers, base area shuttle busses, cafeteria trays and bright yellow jackets worn by Mountain Ambassadors.
  • During Safety Week, anyone who purchases a ski or snowboard helmet at Killington Sports or at Killington Outfitters will receive a voucher for a two-for-one mid-week, non-holiday lift ticket valid for the 2008 season.
  • This will be the fourth year Killington has partnered with ski and snowboard shops located along Killington Road and this program has become an integral component of Killington’s safety awareness campaign. Killington provides NSAW posters and Your Responsibility Code cards and stickers to shops, which allows shop staff to help promote safety awareness messages to the collective customer base on a one-to-one basis.
  • Another example of an ongoing Killington Safety Week activity that has grown and expanded over the years is the Safety Awareness Table at the Ramshead Family Center. At the Safety Awareness Table, younger guests create individual safety posters and interact with Mountain Ambassadors and patrol staff. This activity also promotes increased parental interest and involvement. By participating in the activities at the Safety Awareness Table, kids also have an opportunity to enter a raffle to win a new ski or snowboard helmet.
  • Throughout Safety Week at Killington, Mountain Ambassadors, Patrollers and Ski and Snowboard School Instructors will be handing out Heads Up - Know the Code stickers and Smart Style cards to guests. Mountain Ambassadors and staff will be wearing bright yellow jackets that display important safety awareness messages based on Your Responsibility Code.
  • Heads Up! Photo Shoot – Hey kids, get your photos! Kids can have their photos taken with a life size Heads Up! logo slope side at Ramshead Lodge (weather permitting). Look for the big yellow Heads Up! sign throughout the week.
  • Safety Poster Contest – In order to promote slope safety awareness and education to elementary school children, 4th and 5th graders are eligible to create posters illustrating any one of the seven points of Your Responsibility Code or one of the four elements of Smart Style. These poster entries will be on display around the resort throughout the season. Posters will be judged in two categories: Best Overall Safety Message and Most Creative Design. Two winners will receive a new ski or snowboard package and two runners-up will receive a gift card from Killington Outfitters. Killington Resort poster winners and runners-up will be entered in the NSAA National Poster Contest.
  • In addition, videos, point of purchase displays, contests, giveaways and special events focus on the seven-point Heads Up campaign, which provides the basis for awareness of safe skiing and riding throughout the resort.   • Starting Jan. 19 and running through Safety Week, anyone who purchases a new ski or snowboard helmet at Okemo's Snowsports Shop will receive a coupon for 50 percent off a full-day lift ticket, or 50 percent off a full-day equipment rental or high-performance demo, or 50 percent off a group lesson or specialty clinic.
  • Okemo’s “Helmet Head” contest will start on Jan. 19. Okemo staff members will be out on the mountain taking pictures of candidates with the best helmet head – that cool, disheveled look of matted hair that happens when a skier or snowboarder removes his helmet after a great day on the slopes. A panel of judges will select the top-ten best helmet heads and post those photos at okemo.com for one week of voting by website visitors. The participant who receives the most votes at the end of the week will be awarded two complimentary lift tickets from Okemo.
  • Jan. 20 will be PHAT (Protect Your Head at All Times/Protect Your Head on All Terrain) Day at Okemo. The Vermont Snow Sports Research Team, a partnership of Vermont Children's Hospital at Fletcher Allen Health Care and the University of Vermont College of Medicine, will be on location to help educate skiers and riders about helmet use. Over the past five years, this team has been focused on developing a program to prevent serious head injuries by increasing voluntary ski helmet use among both children and adults. The team of physicians and health care providers is headed by Robert Williams, M.D., pediatric anesthesiologist, and critical care specialist at Vermont Children's Hospital at Fletcher Allen. In addition to education, the team’s project includes observations of skiers and riders to determine baseline data about helmet use. Their work has been presented at medical conferences, accepted for publication in medical journals and has been extensively covered by news media nationwide. The program’s presence at a resort includes posters, distribution of brochures an exhibit, stickers and prizes. The program is non-coercive and is designed to promote both helmet use and skiing and boarding as a healthy lifestyle. Visit www.skihelmetsafety.org for more information.
  • New this year, as a way to promote safety and to familiarize skiers and riders with the Skier Responsibility Code, Okemo will be running a Safety Scavenger Hunt on Sun., Jan. 20.  Elements of the “Code” and “Smart Style” will be strategically placed along trails all over the mountain.  Participants who visit the most messages will be entered to win a prize from Okemos’ prize vault.
  • Okemo will also be conducting a Safety Awareness Poster Contest for elementary-school aged children. Posters must be based on one or more of the seven elements of the “Skier Responsibility Code.” Or the three elements of “Smart Style.”  In addition to prizes, all winning entries will be posted at the resort and online at okemo.com, and they will be submitted to the National Ski Areas Association’s national contest.

  • We have a new safety video which will be viewable in the Day Lodge and can be downloaded from our website.
  • The skier responsibility code will be posted on our website, morning faxes and mentioned on the snow phone during the National Safety Week from January 19-25.
  • The Kids Club is participating in the kid¹s safety poster contest.
  • Signage and Banners will be hung in visible locations around the resort.
  • The skier responsibility code will be posted on the bulletin boards around the mountain and included in our daily conditions report posted around the mountain.
  • Canine Hero Safety Cards will be available throughout the mountain for kids to collect. After they have collected four cards their names will be entered in a raffle for a Giro helmet.
  • There will be a station set up in the Day Lodge with safety information and a ski patroller on hand to answer all your questions. Collect all our rescue doggie cards and memorize the responsibility code to win a Giro Helmet.
  • Helmets will be on sale in the Right Angle Sports all week with custom fittings by a Giro representative.
  • An Avalanche Beacon Practice Area is located by the Campbell Basin Lodge. Hone your transceiver skills with our new easy searcher practice system. Located at the Campbell Basin Lodge, the easy searcher has multiple victims at three levels of difficulty. The system is free and always open.
  • Ski patrol will be on hand all week to answer questions.
  • Level I Avalanche Hazard Evaluation Training 1/12-1/13/2007: This intensive weekend course focuses on the principals of stability evaluation. Each day includes classroom and fieldwork.   • Level II Avalanche Hazard Evaluation Training 1/26-1/27/2007: This is the premier advanced course in the Northwest. The course features instructors that are professional avalanche forecasters, with over 90 years of combined experience. The format of field and classroom allows the participants to focus on forecasting problems specific to the Northwest. An emphasis is placed on skill development and practice. Classroom workshops will contain some problem solving. This course provides great benefit to professionals and participants familiar with avalanche fundamentals.   • Safety Patrol: The yellow-jacketed crews are stationed around the mountain in order to prevent speeding and give updates on the current mountain conditions, with constant communication with ski patrol.

  • Youth Safety Awareness Poster Contest – For the past several years the resort has encouraged local youth to participate in its Safety Poster Contest. Participation is open to both elementary and middle school children (single children or groups of 4 to 6 students). Interested students can contact their school teacher for entry deadlines and further details or the resort directly at 353-2300 x1313.
  • In-School GTR Ski Patrol Assemblies – Ski Patrol and their rescue dogs will again host the popular safety assemblies during Safety Week in local schools. Students will be educated on practicing safe skiing and becoming familiar with the Responsibility Code. The Code is published in the Grand Targhee Trail Map and on the resort website.
  • Avalanche Rescue Dog Demonstration – Demonstrations at the base area will take place every other Saturday at 3:00 p.m. beginning January 26th.
  • Weekly GTR Patrol hosted Backcountry Safety Talks – Ski Patrol will continue to host the open to the public Thursday meetings at Tony’s Pizza located in Driggs. These meetings are in efforts to educating mountain travelers on practicing safe backcountry techniques and becoming familiar current snow conditions.
