Climate Change

Climate change is the number one threat to the snowsports industry. NSAA and its member resorts are taking action.

Ski areas are on the front lines of Climate Change. We are taking action by reducing our impact, advocating for solutions and making investments in our operations to boost resiliency.

Ski Industry Climate Change Policy

NSAA supports policy tools that propel our nation’s transition to an equitable clean energy economy, sustain healthy ecosystems and allow for a lifetime of outdoor recreation experiences for all:

  • Regulatory standards and legislation to curb greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions
  • Investments to accelerate the transition to a zero-emissions economy including research, jobs, green infrastructure, transmission investments, and permit reform
  • Incentives for renewable energy and storage, cleaner transportation and fuels, clean technology innovation and natural carbon storage solutions
  • Pricing carbon pollution to incentivize reductions in carbon emissions across the board

Our Pledge

NSAA pledges to take the following actions:

  • Engage in advocacy with key policy makers in support of the adoption of standards and legislation to curb carbon emissions
  • Raise awareness among policy makers on the impacts of climate change on the ski industry and rural communities, including the role that extreme weather events play
  • Take a leadership role in facilitating ski area engagement of the 10 million yearly snowsports participants on climate action and advocacy
  • Provide its members with education, tools and programs to reduce GHG emissions in their operations and green their supply chains
  • Support members in their engagement with their state and local utility to decarbonize the grid
  • Support research and funding of adaptation, resiliency and restoration measures that will protect the outdoor experiences enjoyed by millions of Americans, and ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy the benefits of mountain recreation
  • Collaborate with other industries and business coalitions in support of climate change solutions to strengthen our voice and maximize our effectiveness
  • Broaden our climate partnerships to ensure lasting climate change solutions

Advocacy. Mitigation. Resiliency.

Advocacy

Raising the collaborative business voice of the ski industry for broadscale regulatory and legislative action.

How We Advocate

NSAA advocates at the Federal level in support of policy and resource decisions that position outdoor recreation, the ski industry and mountain communities for continued growth and success. Ski areas are major employers in mountain communities and play a significant role in supporting rural economies. Ski areas are also vulnerable to the impacts of climate change as resorts across the country depend on the natural environment to operate. Extreme weather events, warming air temperatures, and risk of snow drought, all exacerbated by climate change, have the potential to negatively affect ski area operations.

Over the 2023-24 year, NSAA coordinated and collaborated on multiple efforts while also highlighting examples of climate advocacy leadership within the ski industry. Thanks to all who raised their voices over the past year in support of climate action. Here’s a quick look at what NSAA has been doing on the climate advocacy front:

  • LEAD on a Clean Economy & recipient of the Ceres MVP Award (March 2024)
