Growing the Sport

Ensuring the Future of Snowsports

Over the past 20 years, U.S. participation in downhill skiing and snowboarding has remained relatively flat, hovering around 9.5MM individuals. Beginner conversion also remained flat at 19%. Then the Covid-19 pandemic hit, and the desire to get outside struck 10.5 MM people, a record number of participants. Over 1 million of these participants were trying snowsports for the first time.

So why does skiing have a growth problem?

It's about ensuring the future of our sport. About the health and wellness of our communities. It's about getting the next generation involved in our sport as our most dedicated generation ages out of the sport. About increasing access to outdoor recreation, and making sure that outdoor recreation is welcoming to all people. And by increasing the number of folks who love the outdoors, we create a population that cares about protecting our natural environment.

NSAA Conversion Cup

The NSAA Conversion Cup Award recognizes the best ski area programs aimed at bringing in first-time guests and converting them into lifelong participants. While there is no single recipe that works for every ski area, the common denominator for success is demonstrating a dedication to getting these new participants excited about snowsports, so much so that they come back time and again.
